Entry-level Defense and Foreign Policy Position in the DC Office of a Democratic U.S. Senator from Hawaii

U.S. Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii is currently hiring for an entry-level national security policy position in his Washington, DC, office. The portfolio includes foreign policy and veterans affairs. This position has great potential for growth and promotion within the office, and it provides an opportunity to join a great work environment with a team of committed, experienced professionals.   • a demonstrated interest in defense, foreign relations policy, and/or veterans affairs,
  • ties to Hawaii (preferred), such as a current/former resident of the state or through work experience related to the state.

Responsibilities
The responsibilities for this position include conducting policy research, drafting correspondence, writing memos to brief the senator, and performing administrative duties. This staff position will work as part of the team that advises the senator on topics related to defense, foreign policy, and veterans affairs. Responsibilities will include assisting with the senator’s work on the Senate Appropriations Committee (including the senator’s role as ranking members of the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies subcommittee). This position will also assist in developing and advancing the senator’s policy priorities, such as promoting alternative energy research and military installation resilience, strengthening engagement with Asia Pacific allies and partners, and promoting telemedicine through the Department of Veterans Affairs. The position reports directly to the senator’s national security advisor.

Experience and Skills
Qualified candidates will have zero to five years of work experience. Applicants must:
  • have strong writing, communication, research, and organizational skills;
  • work well as part of a team; exercise sound judgment; operate well under pressure; and
  • have a college degree by the time of the start date in the office.

Salary and Benefits
The starting salary for this entry-level position is $40,000 per year with the potential for a promotion and raise after 12 months.
