Boston Career Trek Program

The Gordon Career Center is offering a new 3-day immersive career exploration program over spring break. The program begins on-campus and includes a day trip to Boston to meet with Wesleyan alumni at their places of work. Students will have the option to choose from treks in one of six different fields including sales/marketing, tech, health, journalism/media, education and visual arts. 

Participate in Boston Career Treks to explore your career interests, learn more about an industry, observe different professional cultures, make connections with alumni in the field, and develop critical networking skills.
 
PROGRAM DATES & INFORMATION
March 18-20, 2020 (Note: this is during the second week of spring break)
Day 1 - Program Preparation (on-campus)
Day 2 - Boston Trek (leave from campus, meals in Boston & transportation provided)
Day 3 - Program Wrap Up (on-campus)

TREK INDUSTRIES AND SITE VISITS WILL INCLUDE:
Sales/Marketing: Wayfair, HubSpot, CarGurus
Media/journalism: WGBH Studios, Northern Light Productions, America's Test Kitchen
Visual Arts: Museum of Fine Arts, Stimson Landscape Architects, Krakow Witkin Gallery
Health: OPENPediatrics/Boston Children's Hospital, Mass Health Policy Commission, Boston Health Care Center for the Homeless
Tech: Google, Wayfair, Klaviyo
Education: Museum of Science, Big Picture Learning, Harvard Graduate School of Education
 
HOUSING AND DINING
Housing remains open over spring break. Select meals will be provided as part of this program. Note that the Spring semester meal plan begins at dinner on Sunday, March 22.

PROGRAM FEE
The program is free to all students. However, you will be charged $100 to your student account if you are a no-show or cancel after the confirmation period.

ELIGIBILITY
Open to all class years and majors.

You must have your resume approved on Handshake by the Gordon Career Center in order to apply to (via this posting) and be considered for this program. Note that the resume review process can take several days so it's best to get a head start on this process if your resume is not yet approved. Please refer to the GCC's resume review/approval process and resume resources listed here.

SELECTION 
Registration is limited to 48 students, 8 students per industry trek. Students who complete the application in full will be selected at the end of the application window by random lottery. If you are not selected, you will be put on a waitlist and will be notified if spots open up. 

APPLICATION & SELECTION DATES
January 23 - Application opens
February 13 - Application deadline (11:59pm)
February 14 - Students will be notified of selection/waitlist
February 21 - Selected students must confirm their participation or forfeit their slot

HOW TO APPLY - 2 STEPS:
1. Click "Apply Externally" to apply with your approved resume through Handshake.
2. Once submitted, you will be taken to an external application (google form) that must be completed in order to be considered for this program. As part of the google application form you will indicate which industry trek you are applying for and will be asked to provide a short essay response to the following question: "Tell us about your interest in this career field and what you hope to gain from participating in the program. (200 word min./300 word max.)"
