Student Mental Health Advocacy Intern – Summer 2020

CARDINAL INTERNSHIP: Middletown, CT. KTP hired a Wes student last summer and was originally passed on to us through Laura Patey, Dean for Academic Advancement. KTP has a strong interest in receiving applications from Wes students. Good opportunity for students in mental health and mental health advocacy.

OVERVIEW
Keep the Promise Coalition (KTP) is a statewide, grassroots mental health advocacy coalition with an office at the Gilead Community Services Social Club in Middletown. KTP has been vested in working towards shaping the State of Connecticut to support people with mental health and addiction conditions to live successfully in their community since 1999.
 
KTP’s vision is a state in which people with mental health conditions are able to live successfully in the community. They have access to housing and other community-based supports and services that are recovery-oriented, person-driven, and holistic in their approach to wellness.

KTP’s mission is to involve and empower all voices in Connecticut to influence public policy with the goal of expanding opportunities for full community integration. This happens through an array of individualized supports and services, including but not limited to supportive housing, peer support, employment, education, protection of legal rights, and access to health care.

INTERNSHIP
* Student Mental Health Advocacy Internship
 
Internship Responsibilities:
  • Visiting psycho-social clubhouses throughout the state to talk about grassroots advocacy opportunities and to increase membership
  • Update the KTP website
  • General office duties
  • Visits to state legislators (depending on a special session)
  • Possible Rallies/Press Conferences
  • Writing thank you emails/letters to legislators for work they did this past session (helping members)
  • Assist in producing a new set of legislative priorities for the 2021 session
  • Helping and encouraging Vote Registration
  • Assist with and attend Candidate Forums
  • Preparing for monthly meetings & KTP Coordinating Council meetings (KTPCC)
  • Attending monthly meetings & KTPCC meetings, taking and typing up meeting notes
  • Mailing handouts and meeting notes to those unable to attend meetings
