JOB TITLE:
Equity Intern – Multiple Student Positions

TYPICAL DUTIES:

Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs (or designee), the Equity Interns are responsible for collaborating with the administrative staff of Student Affairs to advance the ongoing equity and inclusion work of the team. Specifically, the team is conducting an equity review of all policies and practices across the Division of Student Affairs to ensure equity for historically marginalized student populations.

The schedule for this position is flexible but we estimate 10 hours per week during the academic year, with the possibility of summer employment for interested candidates.

Objectives include:

·        Study SOC retention trends and implement support structures/programs that promote academic success and SOC retention. (Academic Advancement, SAAC)

·        Incorporate anti-racist training as a required element of new student orientation, including opportunities for processing/reflection. (SALD, SAAC)

·        Review and modify (as necessary) anti-racist training in Residential Life curriculum, including opportunities for processing/reflection. (Res Life, SAAC)

·        Comprehensive review and restructuring of program house assignments using an anti-racist lens. Ensure that the needs of Women of Color House, Malcolm X House, Ubuntu, and other similar program houses are prioritized. (Res Life, URLC, SAAC)

·        Review and assess impact of current policy prohibiting FY SOC from living in program houses. Predict impact of changing this policy as requested by Ujamaa. Adjust policy if/as appropriate. Consider staffing implication as necessary. (Res Life, URLC, SAAC)

·        Prioritize hiring a CAPS clinician who specializes in treating Black and Black LGBTQAI+ students, specifically dealing with racial and sexual trauma. (CAPS)

·        Embed restorative justice practices in disciplinary processes. Audit and revise existing policies as appropriate. (DOS, SJPC, Res Life, SAAC)

·        Ensure holistic approach to judicial sanctioning that considers potential disparate impact of sanctions on Black and/or FGLI students. (DOS, SJPC, SAAC)

·        Implement ongoing anti-racist training for Public Safety staff. Increase community awareness by listing training on PS website. (PS, PSAC, SAAC)

·        Review current practices for filing and reviewing complaints about the behavior of Public Safety staff. Make adjustments to improve transparency. Consider hosting community conversations about the process and involving Black students where possible/appropriate. (PS, PSAC, SAAC)

·        Streamline and better publicize the process for allocating Student Affairs emergency funding to FGLI students. (VPSA, Academic Advancement, SAAC)

Additional projects as identified during the ongoing project.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Currently enrolled student in good standing. Understanding of antiracist framework/lens. Ability to work effectively with Student Affairs staff and appropriate student governance committees on the above objectives. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience working with Auja Campos, Pangea, Shakti, Ujamaa, or similar students identity groups.
