Student Academic Resources - Peer Technology Specialist

Peer Technology Specialist

Student Academic Resources (SAR) is seeking to hire a student with an aptitude for learning and using digital tools and technologies, an interest in helping others navigate a wide variety of digital tools, and the ability to demonstrate and train others on the use of various technology programs.
SAR coordinates programs for intellectual enrichment and academic support with the goal of fostering a community culture that recognizes the relationship between intellectual growth and personal development. The office strives to share information with the campus community, in order to increase awareness and use of appropriate services, with the goal of facilitating academic achievement for all students.

SAR provides workshops, as well as individual technology consultations and training, on various digital tools and technologies for education and productivity. The Peer Technology Specialists would work under the guidance of the Accessibility Specialist to expand this resource.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Use a variety of digital tools and technologies in everyday activities and coursework
  • Coordinate campus-wide outreach to increase awareness of digital tools and technologies available
  • Meet with individuals who are interested in various technologies and/or digital tools, in order to assist them with exploring programs, learning how to use them, and providing referrals as needed
  • Research, and seek campus input on, new technology initiatives
  • Create and organize digital tools and technology resources, workshops, demonstrations, and informational sessions
  • Assist Student Academic Resources in management and tracking use of digital resources, tools, and licenses
  • Represent Student Academic Resources at various campus events and programs


General Qualifications:

  • Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively with diverse individuals and groups
  • Reliable to complete tasks, and be responsible when privy to confidential information; applicants must be willing to sign a confidentiality agreement
  • Demonstrated high attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, while managing multiple projects
  • Skilled at providing patient instruction and an aptitude for recognizing subtle cues which may indicate the need for additional support, and the capacity to considerately make the appropriate referral
  • Energetic and effective presentation skills
  • Currently enrolled and in good academic standing
  • Available to any student regardless of work study eligibility


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Student Academic Resources, digital tools, and various assistive technologies
  • Interest and aptitude in learning about and using technology
  • Awareness of the supports, resources, and services available at Wesleyan, including peer programs
  • Proficient in the use of G-Suite and organizing/hosting virtual meetings
  • Creative problem solving, and a growth mindset approach to challenges


Position Location:

  • Student Academic Resources, North College, Room 022


Evaluation procedure:

On-going guidance and review of work on a regular basis by the supervisor is part of the team and/or one-on-one meetings. Team members, students, and campus community members with whom the Peer Technology Specialists work may also provide feedback.


Classification levels:

  • Classification levels are based on years employed with SAR
  • The base pay rate for the Peer Technology position is $12/hour
  • Pay rate increases by $0.25 in subsequent years


Schedule and hours per week:

Each Peer Technology Specialist is expected to work 2 - 6 hours per week.
