GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
A lifeguard’s primary responsibility is to care for the safety of the public at the pool and throughout the YMCA facility by using preventative and responsive rescue, first aid and CPR/AED techniques. Lifeguards are also responsible for the basic physical upkeep of the pool area when such duties do not interfere with the surveillance of the water. A lifeguard must also respond to member and guest inquiries by answering questions or directing them to the appropriate staff member. Communication should be polite but very brief and should never interfere with the surveillance of the water. Regardless of other duties, lifeguards should always be scanning the water when patrons are swimming.
 
PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES:
·        While on duty, constantly scan the surface and the bottom of the pool using 10-10 scanning technique from the pool deck (while patrolling) or from the elevated lifeguard stand (your only acceptable seat).
·        Provide the appropriate rescue and treatment for distressed or injured patrons.
·        Always provide care with proper personal equipment and the use of standard precautions.
·        Help maintain the clean and sanitary conditions of the facilities. 
·        Enforce regulations pertaining to showers, food and drink, conduct, etc.
·        Control the behavior of those who use the facilities in order to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.
·        Maintain accurate records as assigned.
·        Learn and review emergency procedures.
·        Attend all staff meetings. This may include, but is not limited to, minimum distance swim tests and in-service training sessions. 
·        Be able to pass a fitness test at all in-service training sessions.
·        Report to work no later than 5 minutes before the start of the shift.
·        Be in proper uniform: solid color swim trunks (male) or one-piece bathing suits (female) and a staff shirt. Guards may wear only bathing suits if the lifeguard label is present and visible at all times.
·        Lifeguards will wear a whistle at all times.
·        Never leave the pool deck unless one of the following conditions is met: 1) Another certified lifeguard is taking over the shift or 2) The pool and the pool area are cleared of patrons, and all the doors are locked.
·        Be positive, polite and patient when dealing with members. Greet them when they arrive and offer an appropriate farewell when they leave the pool.
·        Help members when possible but never stop scanning the water.
·        Be able to articulate the Y’s mission, values, and benefits.
OTHER ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
·        Must be at least 16 years of age.
·        Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
·        Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
·        Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
·        SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
·        Minimum age of 16
·        Certifications:
·        American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid
·        CPR for Lifeguards (Professional Rescuers)
·        Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness
·        Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards

·        While performing functions of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
