Clinical Information Internship Opportunity

VisualDx is seeking a PostBac student or recent college graduate pre-medical student to serve as an education awareness and clinical informatics research intern. This highly motivated individual will join our group of physicians, medical librarians and other team members to participate in educational research and medical communication. Our organization focuses on reducing medical diagnostic, testing and therapeutic decision errors and the intern will serve as an outreach liaison and coordinator to medical students and educators to help us disseminate awareness of www.visualdx.com and www.projectimpact.org

Our professional clinical decision support system VisualDx is used at the point of care to improve diagnostic, testing, therapeutic decisions, and patient engagement. VisualDx is both a desktop EHR interoperable system and a mobile app, which includes ground-breaking AI/machine learning image analysis capabilities. We also license Aysa, a “digital front door” machine learning based application. We currently serve more than 300 enterprise customers and half of all medical schools in the US. Research at VisualDx is conducted in, but not limited to, broad areas of medicine including internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, dermatology, infectious disease, pharmacology, toxicology/adverse drug events and public health issues. We have a particular focus on transforming medical education and research in how information tools can improve medical education and care delivery. Opportunities to submit articles for publication will be encouraged. 

The candidate must be high energy, enthusiastic, be detail-oriented and thorough in their work habits. The student researcher should be passionate about information delivery, new media and have excellent writing and verbal communications skills. This individual will help us articulate our mission and work with us to transform medical education to include augmented decision and clinical reasoning tools.

This internship will ideally position the applicant for medical school by training in the clinical language of medicine, by developing research skills and by differentiating the candidate with a knowledge of the field of medical informatics.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

  • Network to medical students to build awareness and train in the use of clinical reasoning information tools (The candidate will spend 1-2 month in intensive initial training with our staff of medical librarians and physicians)
  • Write research papers and manuscripts for scholarly and news/journal publications
  • Assist in the development of a medical terminology database by reviewing medical content
  • Example task: Blog, tweet, and other social media communication focused on medical student education and information technology. Outreach to medical students passionate about making medical education more inclusive and equitable
  • Example task: Conceptualize and execute software use evaluation studies in medical education. Create online surveys, develop survey protocols and conduct medical education studies

The intern will become fluent in the field of medical informatics and decision support and will attend medical education meetings with our team. The student will be encouraged to develop a research poster for presentation at a scientific meeting such as the Diagnostic Errors in Medicine Meeting. 
 
Required Education and/or Experience:  Must currently be Post-Bac pre-med or recent college graduate interested in medicine. Must be a great communicator, logical, analytical and driven to have impact in this world. Spanish or foreign language skills a plus as VisualDx has a global user base.

Research Stipend: Commensurate with level of experience

Location: Can be remote with travel to occasional meetings in Rochester NY, or in Rochester NY
